What’s IMD & IME?
Two commonly used manufacturing processes are in-mold decorating and in-mold electronics manufacturing services. However, despite being necessary manufacturing and customization processes that are available for companies to utilize, many people are unclear as to what they actually are and what they can be used for. Here is some information from your local Minnesota contract manufacturers at Golden Valley Products about in-mold decorating (IMD) and in-mold electronics (IME): Twin Cities MN Contract Manufacturers
What’s In-Mold Decorating?
In-Mold Decorating (IMD) is a process that involves 2nd surface printed graphics on a flat plastic film, which is then formed into a custom shape. The formed film is then placed into a custom mold for the injection-molding process, which back-fills the film, creating a bonded, molded part. As the part hardens, the graphic film is fused in place. This results in a tough, durable, and stylized final product that can be created with a wider range of complex curves and shapes than a standard graphic overlay.
IMD is used across many different types of industries and for various types of applications including (but not limited to):
- Medical Diagnostics Control Panels
- Surgical and ICU Equipment
- Emblems and Nameplates
- Dashboard and Automotive Control Panels
- Appliance Controls
- Security Control Pads

What’s In-Mold Electronics?
In-Mold Electronics (IME) is a process that involves 2nd surface printed graphics and electronics onto a flat plastic film, which is then formed into a custom shape. An electrical connector is then attached to the back side of the film. IME includes functions such as shielding, sensing, capacitive switching, lighting, and much more. This process offers you the ability to reduce the weight and cost of your product, while all the while also improving appearance, functionality, and durability of it as well.
Some of the applications for IME include (but are not limited to):
- Medical equipment
- Military equipment
- Control panel-oriented industrial and manufacturing equipment
- Aerospace applications
- Automotive controls and panels
- Household appliances (i.e., air conditioner control panel, TV remote control, microwave oven panel, etc.)
- Retail and consumer-related equipment or machines (i.e., exercise equipment, vending machines, gasoline pumps, etc.)
